Uterine fibroids are growths that form out of smooth muscle tissue that’s bulging from the uterus. They are extremely common in women of reproductive age – up to 25 percent of women at any time have uterine fibroids. By age 50, 70-80 percent of women have experienced at least one uterine fibroid.
There are treatment options, though, including Chinese medicinal herbs like Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui.
What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids?
In many women, uterine fibroids result in minimal, or zero, symptoms. However, they can also cause debilitating pain and cramping. They can also cause increased menstrual bleeding during periods.
Sometimes, uterine fibroids can interfere with fertility as well. It’s rare, but a large enough fibroid may “kink” the fallopian tubes and prevent an egg from entering. Fibroids may also block a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterine wall.
How Can Chinese Herbal Formulations Help with Uterine Fibroids?
Chinese medicine has a history of success in treating menstruation-related and reproductive issues. It can also improve symptoms related to uterine fibroids, even reducing their size.
A popular treatment approach in Chinese medicine is to combine a pair of herbs – Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui. In Chinese medicine, fibroids are believed to be the result of poor circulation (also termed “stagnation”).
Chuan Xiong is specifically used to vitalize the blood and improve its flow to the reproductive organs. Dang Gui serves much the same purpose and also provides nourishment needed to increase blood supply. Together, these herbs fortify the blood, boost its availability, and promote its flow through the uterus. That means better uterine support and improved defense against uterine fibroids.
